Chemical Industry Leaders Launch New Charter Strengthening Commitment to Safe Chemicals Management

Leaders highlight progress toward SACIM 2020 goals at high-level event at ICCM4
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, October 1, 2015 – Tonight, at the Fourth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4), the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) will publicly launch its updated and strengthened Responsible Care Global Charter, which aims to unite global chemical companies under a unified system of performance management.

To date, 517 chemical industry leaders have pledged support for the Global Charter. The list of signees includes more than 85 percent of the world’s top 100 petrochemical and chemical manufacturers.

All Aboard: Chinese Chemical Industry Leaders Sign Onto Responsible Care Global Charter

On September 18 in Shanghai, chemical industry leaders from around the world gathered as more than 300 Chinese chemical company CEOs belonging to the China Petrochemicals and Chemicals Industry Federation (CPCIF) formally signed onto the Responsible Care® Global Charter. By doing so, China has demonstrated its commitment to strengthen chemicals management systems to safeguard people and the environment.

This is particularly significant as a safe, strong and vibrant chemical industry in China is an asset to both the global chemicals industry and world economy. China is currently the largest chemicals manufacturing economy in the world, valued at around U.S. $1.44 trillion in 2014, and CPCIF members represent 70 percent of the petroleum and chemical industry in China.

Our Unified Vision: The Revised Responsible Care Global Charter

More than 300 ICCA member chemical companies around the world have signed the revised Responsible Care Global Charter, including 80 percent of the largest 102 global chemical companies, as a show of our industry’s unified commitment to safe chemicals management.

In 2015, we updated and strengthened the Global Charter to address ongoing stakeholder expectations and evolving challenges, to enable industry to speak with a common voice about its global commitments.

The enhanced Global Charter includes more stringent process safety and facility security requirements, specific measures to advance sustainability, expand economic opportunity and improve use of resources, and expanded commitment to developing solutions to address societal challenges.
